Illinois Duplicate Title & Temporary Tag Guide

Step‑by‑step checklist for Illinois dealers handling lost titles and issuing 90‑day temporary registration permits (TRPs) for retail deliveries.

Use this checklist when a customer reports a lost title or when you’re cleaning up paperwork before a sale:

  • Illinois issues duplicate titles through the Secretary of State (SOS). Dealers typically help the customer complete the Application for Vehicle Transaction(s) (VSD 190).
  • Use the Electronic Registration and Title (ERT) System to prepare VSD 190 online, then submit it with fees and supporting docs.
  • The customer (or dealer with power of attorney) certifies the original title is lost, stolen, or destroyed and provides the correct VIN and plate number.
  • Collect the SOS duplicate title fee and any lienholder information before submitting.
  • Mail or deliver the completed VSD 190 package to the appropriate SOS address or facility and track processing so you know when the clean title is available.
