The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) allows owners and dealers to request duplicate titles using State Form 205 – Application for Certificate of Title for a Vehicle.

Complete State Form 205 with the correct owner of record, lien information, and vehicle details.
Submit the form, required identification, lien releases, and fees at a BMV branch or by mail.
When you buy at auction or accept a trade‑in with a missing title, clarify who will file the duplicate request and track it until issued.

Indiana interim license plates

Indiana dealers issue interim license plates instead of generic temp tags. These plates are printed through the Secretary of State’s Plates on Demand system.

An interim plate generally authorizes operation for up to 45 days from the date of sale or until permanent registration is issued.
Each plate must clearly display the expiration date and be supported by a completed title/registration application.
