Duplicate / replacement titles
Louisiana duplicate title overview
Louisiana replacement titles are governed by Office of Motor Vehicles policy. Owners and lienholders request a duplicate using DPSMV 1799 – Vehicle Application when the original title is mutilated, lost, destroyed, or never received.
- Confirm that the vehicle is titled in Louisiana and identify any recorded lienholders.
- Have the record owner (or lienholder, where allowed) complete DPSMV 1799, checking the duplicate title option and supplying all requested vehicle details.
- Submit the completed form and fees to OMV—either at a local field office or by mail—following OMV’s current duplicate title policy.
- OMV policy explains that duplicate titles can only be issued to the registered owner, owner’s agent, or lienholder, and sets expectations on when a free replacement may apply if the original was never received.
For dealer deals, build DPSMV 1799 timelines into your funding and delivery promises, especially for older vehicles and complex lien histories.
