Maryland Duplicate Title & Temporary Tag Guide

What Maryland dealers need to do when a customer has a lost title or needs a 30‑day temporary registration to reach inspection.

Use this checklist when a customer reports a lost title or when you’re cleaning up paperwork before a sale:

  • Maryland duplicate titles are requested using form VR‑018, Application for Duplicate Certificate of Title.
  • The registered owner (or authorized agent) completes VR‑018 and selects the reason for the request, such as lost, destroyed, or mutilated title.
  • A copy of valid state‑issued identification must accompany the application, and any existing lienholder must be properly documented.
  • Applications can be processed at full‑service MVA branches, licensed tag and title services, kiosks, or by mail with the required fee.
  • Dealers should ensure the VIN, owner information, and lien details are accurate before submitting to avoid delays in printing the new title.
