New Jersey Duplicate Title & Temporary Tag Guide

How New Jersey dealers handle lost titles and issue traceable electronic temporary tags under MVC rules.

Use this checklist when a customer reports a lost title or when you’re cleaning up paperwork before a sale:

  • New Jersey duplicate titles are requested with the Universal Title Application OS/SS‑UTA or the dedicated duplicate title form OS/SS‑52.
  • The applicant must show proof of ownership such as a current or expired registration, insurance card, or certified registration record.
  • If a lien is recorded, a lien release or authorization from the lienholder is required before MVC will issue a clear duplicate title.
  • Dealers should ensure OS/SS‑52 is fully completed, signed, and accompanied by the correct duplicate title fee.
  • Submit the package at a Vehicle Center appointment or via an approved tag and title service and track when the new title is printed.
