Duplicate / replacement title workflow

Use this checklist when a customer reports a lost title or when you’re cleaning up paperwork before a sale:

New Jersey duplicate titles are requested with the Universal Title Application OS/SS‑UTA or the dedicated duplicate title form OS/SS‑52.
The applicant must show proof of ownership such as a current or expired registration, insurance card, or certified registration record.
If a lien is recorded, a lien release or authorization from the lienholder is required before MVC will issue a clear duplicate title.
Dealers should ensure OS/SS‑52 is fully completed, signed, and accompanied by the correct duplicate title fee.
Submit the package at a Vehicle Center appointment or via an approved tag and title service and track when the new title is printed.

Temporary tags / permits

Use this when the buyer needs to drive on a temporary plate or permit while you finish title and registration work:

New Jersey dealers issue temporary tags through the MVC eTemp Tag system; these are traceable, printed temp plates tied to the specific VIN and buyer.
Before issuing a temp tag, the dealer must enter accurate buyer, vehicle, and insurance information into the eTemp system.
Temp tags are valid for a limited period (typically around 30 days) and are intended to cover the customer until permanent plates and registration are issued.
eTemp tags cannot be reused or transferred to another vehicle, and dealers must follow MVC rules on correcting mistakes or voiding tags.
Remind buyers that they must complete full registration before the eTemp tag expires to avoid tickets or registration problems.
