New York Duplicate Title & Temporary Tag Guide

What New York dealers need to know to replace a lost title and issue in‑transit permits or temporary registrations for retail buyers.

Use this checklist when a customer reports a lost title or when you’re cleaning up paperwork before a sale:

  • New York duplicate titles are requested using form MV‑902 (Application for Duplicate Certificate of Title) or online through NY DMV.
  • Only the titled owner (or authorized party) can request a duplicate; the application must include proper ID and the required fee.
  • Dealers often help the customer complete MV‑902 and gather any lienholder details, but the duplicate title is mailed directly to the owner by law.
  • Verify the VIN, owner information, and any lienholder data match existing records before submitting.
  • If there is an open lien, coordinate with the lienholder to ensure their interest is correctly carried forward on the replacement title.
