Duplicate / replacement titles
North Dakota duplicate title overview
North Dakota titles are issued by the Department of Transportation (NDDOT). When a title is lost, owners typically request a duplicate using the Application for Certificate of Title & Registration of a Vehicle (SFN 2872 or its current equivalent) and indicate that they are seeking a duplicate.
- Have the titled owner complete the application with the vehicle details, owner information, and a stated reason for requesting a duplicate.
- Submit the application and title fee to NDDOT either at a local branch or by mail.
- The duplicate title is mailed to the registered owner or lienholder on record.
- When you cannot obtain a duplicate from the previous owner, NDDOT may have a separate process for establishing a new title; in those edge cases, consider having the customer consult legal counsel.
For dealers, the take‑away is to verify North Dakota title status early in the deal and build duplicate‑title lead time into your delivery promises.
